OPEN PORT CLUB Mix Series

Originally from Milan, Paquita Gordon is now based in Mallorca, and has been active in Europe, including a residency at the Terraformafestival.

After I heard Paquita Gordon's DJ for the first time, I went to listen to her DJ whenever I could. Due to the pandemic, I haven't been able to do so for a year, and our OPC mix series has also taken a year off. I am very happy to be able to restart again with this mix that she prepared for OPC. Here's a window into her world as she delves and explores different kinds of music.

長く過ごした暗い洞窟の奥から微かにグレーがかった朝の光を頼りにゆっくりと外に出ると朝もやで濡れたジャングル。湿度が濃く先の見えない空間には命のエネルギーが充満している。光は闇を照らすが、闇も光を照らす。

イタリア、ミラノ出身のPaquita Gordonは現在、スペインのマジョルカ島に住んでいる。それについてはショートインタビューを読んでいただくとして、彼女は地元ミラノで続く世界中にファンを持つとても魅力的なフェスティバル、Terraforma festivalにおいて毎年プレイし続けている数少ないレジデントDJである。

彼女のDJを初めて聞いた日から僕は可能な限り彼女のDJを聴きに行っている。彼女は全ての曲をレコードでプレイする。少なからず僕が見た限りそうだった。レコードバッグという持ち運べる制限があるからだろうか、彼女のDJには一本の筋が通っている。レコードかデジタルかで優劣なんて無いと個人的にも思っているし好きな方でやればいいと思う。でも彼女はどこであってもレコードでDJをしているという事実は伝えておきたい。

その人生において一度も落ち着くことがなかったであろう音楽への好奇心と知的欲求が溢れ出てしまっている、その都度大きく変わる彼女の1セット=1レコードバッグに僕は毎回何かしら驚かされている。しかしそこにはPaquita Gordonという柱があって聴くたびにそれを違う角度から見てるようだった。見る角度でガラッと表情が変わるがそれは確かに同じ柱だった。しなやかで、強く、気品あるその柱を僕は愛と呼びたい。

Interview

Q1. How and where was the mix recorded? Could you tell us about the idea behind the mix?

このミックスはどこでどのようにして録音されたのでしょうか？また、このミックスの背景にあるアイデアについても教えてください。

The mix is realized at my studio with the use of two Technics 1210 turntables, two Shure needles, an Ecler mixer and a Zoom digital recorder on 14 April 2021. It is composed by a selection of electronic dub and downtempo records from the last thirty years, taking the listeners into a deep sonic adventure.

このミックスは2021年4月14日に私のスタジオで、Technicsのターンテーブル1210を2台、Shureの針2本、Eclerのミキサー、Zoomのデジタルレコーダーを使って形にしました。ここ30年間にリリースされたエレクトロニック・ダブやダウンテンポのレコードのセレクションで構成されており、リスナーを奥深い音の冒険に誘います。

Q2. Tell us about your hometown, how you started DJing, and what kind of musical background you grew up with.

あなたの出身地や、DJを始めたきっかけ、どんな音楽的背景を持って育ったかを教えてください。

I was born in the city of Milan, known as an epicenter of the design and fashion industries, dense of history, culture and architecture. My father Aurelio used to work as a music publisher since the end of the 70s then into the birth and rise of different national radio stations. The rest of the family also shared a musical passion so, since the early age, I was surrounded by audiocassettes, CDs, records, tape recorders, etc., making it become a playground of diverse music. Growing up, this naturally became a profession, also thanks to some encounters and musical experiences in London and Berlin that opened the doors to the universe of clubbing and vinyl digging, helping me develop a specific artistic expression during my university years.

私はデザインやファッション業界の中心地として知られ、歴史や文化、建築物が密集しているミラノで生まれました。父のアウレリオは70年代末から音楽パブリッシャーとして働いており、当時はさまざまなラジオ局が生まれ成長を迎えた時代でした。家族はみんな音楽への情熱を共にしていたので、私は幼い頃からオーディオカセット、CD、レコード、テープレコーダーなどに囲まれ、多様な音楽の遊び場となっていました。ロンドンやベルリンでの出会いや音楽体験は、クラブやレコード・ディギングの世界への扉を開いてくれたし、大学時代に特定の芸術表現を身につける助けともなり、それが自然と仕事へと繋がりました。

Q3. What music did you like to listen to during the pandemic?

パンデミックでは、どのような音楽を聴きましたか？

I had the chance to enjoy my record collection in a different way, listening to many genres as usual, regenerating ideas for future DJ sets.

いつもとは違った方法で自分のレコードコレクションを楽しむことができました。普段通り様々なジャンルの音楽を聴き、これからのDJセットのアイデアを再構築しました。

Q4. What do you do to satisfy your creativity in the absence of a DJ gig?

DJの仕事がないときに、自分の創造性を満たすために何をしていますか？

I dedicated sometime to music production and to work on a project named "il Vulcano" which I develop with the participation of different visual artists and musicians since 2014 in specific sites of the Mediterranean territory. In the last months the actual work consisted into recollecting and editing audio-visual material produced in the past years and start a process towards some publications.

音楽制作と、2014年からビジュアルアーティストやミュージシャンたちと一緒に地中海沿岸のある場所で展開している「il Vulcano」というプロジェクトに時間を費やしています。ここ数ヶ月は、過去数年間に制作したオーディオ・ビジュアル素材の回収と編集を行い、いくつかの発表に向けた作業を始めています。
